Lucifer gets a ten episode fourth season at Netflix… but there could be more to come

One of the biggest events we’ve had on the site so far this year was reporting that Lucifer was saved by Netlix last week after FOX pulled the plug (here) and now we have more news on the fourth season… and beyond!

Showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich have been talking about what the future holds for the Prince of Darkness and it’s al pretty bright.

“Netflix has commissioned 10 all-new episodes,” says Henderson.

“And yet, Season 4 might possibly run longer, if one of the ‘bonus’ episodes gets folded in somewhere. The first thing we’ve got to figure out, is where the one that wasn’t a complete standalone, the Ella-focused episode, might fit.”

Netflix are also keen to get the ball movie at the duo confirm filming will likely begin in August: “We’re hitting the ground running. Everyone is primed and ready.”

The episodes will likely stick to the 43/45 minute format that they’ve used so far but it’s not concrete yet: “we might have a bit of room for flexibility, hopefully, so if there’s a scene we love and we don’t want to cut it, we’re hoping that now we won’t have to. But we’re not suddenly going to have hour-and-a-half episodes!”

As for the ten episodes compared to the usual 22, should the fans be worried? Nope, it seems not: “We were going to have two parts to it anyway, so we’ll just tell a really strong, gnarly first part,” Modrovich says.

As for it being saved, yes, Netflix like the show, but – and we love this – the  fans played a massive part in its being saved as Henderson points out: “The fans were heard, and that’s the biggest thing that we should convey. They [Netflix] saw the passion of the fans, and apparently a number of people over there just like the show.”

Rumours are that the first three seasons will join Netflix (likely when Season 4 arrives) and not only that, but there could be a season 5 in the future as “There is always the potential for more,” Modrovich says when asked if four is the magic number.
