Netflix, Brian Lee O’Malley and Edgar Wright developing Scott Pilgrim anime series!

January 10th, 2022 by Marc Comments

Following on from our report in June 202o that a Scott Pilgrim Vs The World animated series might be incoming (here), we now have confirmation that Scott Pilgrim fans are likely going to be in for a treat very soon thanks to Netflix.

Following on from the graphic novel, movie, video game and so much more, Netflix and UCP, who also make Chucky and Umbrella Academy, are currently developing an anime series.

We must state that, as of yet, there is no series order… but I’d imagine that’s only a matter of time.

The show will be written and executive produced by Scott Pilgrim creator and artist Brian Lee O’Malley. The movie’s director Edgar Wright will also be producing with O’Malley and Are You Afraid of the Dark’s Ben David Grabinski both set to showrun.

Very little is known about the plans for the series at this point, although I’d imagine it’ll be a retelling of the story of O’Malley’s graphic novel, with the Edgar Wright saying in 2020: “There’s some plans – and there’s nothing official yet – but there are some plans to revisit the material in an animation way.

“We’ve been talking with Bryan [Lee O’Malley, creator] and with Jared [LeBoff, executive producer] for a while [about]: What if we did something with the books in anime form? It’s being discussed as we speak.”

However, we also know that O’Malley has hinted, again in 2020, that he would like to revisit his original book to see what happened next: “I would like to revisit the characters [in comic form] and see what they’re up to. I sketched Scott early in the pandemic with a huge beard. I think that would be a funny image.”

There’s a little voice in my head saying this may well be a sequel of sorts, rather than a re-telling… but we’ll know more soon. Hopefully.

What are your thoughts, guys? Are you ready for more Sex Bob-omb? Let us know all your thoughts in the usual ways…
