Oh.

So, you will all remember Squid Game, the series about people who are down and out and find themselves in a desperate battle/game to stay alive and win money? Yeah? Well, it’s becoming a reality.

Oh.

Netflix are taking the concept of the show and developing a ten-part series called Squid Game: The Challenge which will feature 456 players competing to win $4.56m. We’re assuming it’s not to the death. At this stage we don’t know for sure. Probably won’t be though. Nah.

According to Deadline, “the contestants will compete in a series of games inspired by the show plus some new ones and their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them. Casting is now underway”.

The series will be produced by Studio Lambert, the All3Media-backed producer behind Netflix series such as The Circle, and The Garden. It will be filmed in the UK.

Brandon Riegg, VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series at Netflix, said of the new series: “Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment.

“Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end.”

Teaser, poster and info for Squid Game season 2 are here!

Still no mention of if it’s to the death or not. I’d really feel better if they just confirmed this. I’m kidding. It’s not. Probably. That would be illegal. Wouldn’t it? Hello?

On top of all this, we have learned that Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is developing a satire about the creation and popularity of Squid Game called The Best Show on the Planet. Looks like we fans of the show have a lot of Squid Game coming in the future… but will it live up to the original series’ potential? Well, that’s the hard part, isn’t it?

We’ll keep you posted, gang.
