Penny Dreadful returns to showtime with new series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

November 2nd, 2018 by Marc Comments

Well, this come out of nowhere… Penny Dreadful is coming back!

Yes, one of our favourite shows in recent years, Penny Dreadful was Showtime’s supernatural thriller that was a clever, pitch black twist and it starred, among others, Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Josh Hartnett but it seems that this show will not revisit those characters  but instead will bring us to a new time and chapter.

Creator, writer and exec producer John Logan has been working on this “spiritual descendant” of the original show which starts filming next year.

City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles for a story that Showtime describes as “a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.” Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the devil, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will explore a mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a historical backdrop. The series will feature all new characters and storylines.

Here’s what Logan had to say: “We will now be grappling with specific historical and real-world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”

Showtime programming president Gary Levine said: “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels promises to be an extraordinary saga of familial love set against the terrifying monsters that are around us and within us.”

And that’s all we have for now, but if it can recapture the magic of the original show’s three seasons then the excitement starts here.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
