Plans afoot to reboot Harry Potter for massive TV project at Warners

April 6th, 2023 by Marc Comments

We’ve known for a while that HBO/Warners Discovery has plans for Harry Potter’s future (here) but I have to say, I hadn’t imagined this.

When we reported in January 2021 that a new Harry Potter TV series was planned, we imagined it would be set in the world of the movies (here) with the cast from the eight movies still being part of the plan, especially since we heard rumours of a sequel Cursed Child movie (here) down the line with the cast at the age they are currently in real life… we have been waiting a long time for it but now it seems that’s not the case at all.

Harry Potter live-action TV shows in development

Word is that JK Rowling’s creation is set for the small screen in a new series that will adapt the seven Harry Potter book with a whole new cast and each season covering one of the books – basically, that means seven seasons at the very least given that Rowling has written seven books, each for a year at school in Hogwarts.

While the rumour states that it comes from a source at Warners, the whole thing is in the very early stages and they want Rowling involved to ensure it remains true to her vision but as of now, she hasn’t given it the go-ahead.

Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly looking for the series to form part of the company’s new streaming strategy, as the company prepares to host a presentation for investors and the general public next week on April 12. The presentation will preview its new streaming platform – which will collapse HBO Max and Discovery+ into one – along with its upcoming raft of streaming content.

While a new Harry Potter adaptation is not an entirely unattractive prospect, it’s going to be interesting to see where this leaves the Fantastic Beasts franchise – although going by the last two movies’ numbers, that’s probably dead in the water already.

Harry Potter has a magical (ahem) future ahead, that’s for sure. Thoughts?
