RUMOUR CONTROL: Has companion been cast for new Doctor Who?

August 22nd, 2017 by Marc Comments

Ok, so this story is from The Mirror, so needless to say we’re not putting our money down of this one…

But, it’s being reported that now that Doctor Who’s lead is, for the first time ever, a woman (here) in the form of actress Jodie Whittaker, it seems that we may also be set for a change (although not a unique one as fans of Adric, Jack Harkness and others will tell you) in the companion stakes too.

The Doctor traditionally travels with a female companion – can we still say assistant? – but it from next season we will see another dynamic shift as rumour has it Coronation Street actor and gameshow host Bradley Walsh is the current favourite to travel the universe with the grumpy Timelord.

The newspaper reports that this is a deliberate move by new showrunner Chris Chibnall to move away from the traditional companion role.

“Bradley is super excited to be joining the cast of Doctor Who in such a key role,” The Mirror’s source claims.

“It means that his schedule over the coming months will be jam-packed – so he won’t be able to continue with the full range of programs he currently makes for ITV. But, crucially, it won’t affect his role as presenter of The Chase. He loves that show with a passion and so does the audience, so he’s delighted to have found a way to make it all work.”

Frankly, we don’t see Walsh joining the show, however, we reckon it’s not only possible but likely we’ll see a male companion joining the new Doctor. Wether he’ll be older or younger is anyone’s guess, but we’d have to say it’ll likely be a ‘he’.

Which is a little conflicting. When the BBC cast Whittaker in the role it was not a real surprise because the show had gone out of its way to establish that The Doctor had no real regard as to his/her gender… but if that’s the case, why is is such a priority to have a male companion?

Whatever happens, Doctor Who certainly has our attention…
