SDCC 2026 WATCH: First trailer and details on Mike Flanagan and Stephen King’s Carrie series

All the way from SDCC, we have our first trailer for the highly anticipated Carrie series from Mike Flanagan and Stephen King from Prime Video.

We all know the story from the iconic 1974 novel by King or Brian DePalma’s superb movie version in 2979, but it looks like Flanagan is doing something new with this version.

As before, the story focuses on Carrie White (Summer H Howell), a teenager with telekinetic powers, forced to attend public high school after the untimely death of her father and under the gaze of an over-controlling mother, played here by Samantha Sloyan. While at school, Carrie becomes the victim of a horrifying incident at the hands of girls she believed to be her friends, resulting in her powers taking over with devastating consequences.

On the new eight-part series adapting King’s shortest novel, Flanagan says: “Typically, when you’re adapting a Stephen King book, the mission is […] how do you make it smaller? This was the complete inverse. If we’re going to tell the story of Carrie White in longform, how do we make it expand?”

A long-time collaborator with King, including Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game and the upcoming (hopefully) Dark Tower, Flanagan knows that DePalma’s adatation is gold standard and wisely wants to tell a very different story: “DePalma adapted it faithfully and beautifully 50 years ago,” says Flanagan, “So for me, this was never going to be a straight adaptation. The only way to approach it was to build something new out of the ingredients of Carrie. Otherwise, there’s really no purpose in trying to retread ground that’s been so beautifully walked before.”

On putting Carrie White in a modeen school setting, Flanagan had a clear vision: “The themes that Steve [King] was talking about half a century ago of kindness versus cruelty, of empathy and bullying, and violence at school have become even more relevant today than he could have contemplated because of our relationship to technology and the degree to which violence encroaches on our high schoolers, especially in the United States.

“So that meant we had an opportunity to tell a story about a modern teenage experience that could use the seeds of these characters King created 50 years ago, but express them completely differently.”

Stephen King is, without question, my favourite author and I love what Flanagan has been doing with King’s work in recent years, so, while I – and many others – wait for The Dark Tower, I’ll take any collaborations I can and I’m delighted to hear Flanagan is wise enough to not mimic DePalma’s masterful work when it comes to Carrie White.

Carrie in the modern age? I’m cautiously optimistic, especially with Flanagan handling proceedings.
