Seth Green says Disney believes there’s no fan demand for Star Wars Detours to ever be released

July 5th, 2021 by Marc Comments

Many of you may remember Star Wars Detours (ten years ago!), the tongue-in-cheek animated series that poked fun and, we’re led to believe, also told proper stories set in the Star Wars universe, and you may also recall how, when Disney bought the franchise, the series was shelved.

Well, we have made it known that we, like many fans, would love to see this series… no matter how bad it might be.

But now Star Wars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Seth Green is here to tell us that… it’s not coming any time soon. Dammit.

The star returned to Star Wars a couple of weeks back when he voiced (again) Todo 360, Cad Bane’s droid companion, and, ten years ago, in the age when George Lucas was loving shows like Family Guy and Robot Chicken, he hired Green – and his Robot Chicken partner Matt Senreich – to develop their own fun take on the Star Wars legacy.

So, 62 six-minute scripts were written and, before Disney, 39 were filmed and completed. And, to this day, they lie in a vault at Disney/Lucasfilm

“The most recent conversations I’ve had with anybody who would be in a position to say so say that it’s not soon,” says Green.

“We finished them almost 10 years ago, and so there would have to be a bit of reconfiguring of the existing stuff to make it something that Disney+ would release as a Lucasfilm offering. And the way it’s been explained to me is that there hasn’t been enough interest high enough up to go through what it would take to put it out, and that there isn’t an interest in releasing this content on Disney+ from Lucasfilm.”

Now, as someone who converses with a lot of Star Wars fans, I happen to know that there is a big want out there for this show to see the light of day. However, Green has no regrets about the show never being released: “I don’t really have an emotional position because I got to spend four straight years making something with George Lucas.

“And my partner and I, and all of the people that got to work on it — the artists and actors and directors and animators — we all got to make something Star Wars with the guy who created it. And so I know over those four years that he was having fun, and that’s really all I care about. I got a priceless experience with one of my truest heroes, and got to see him laugh and enjoy all of the things that he had created, in a time before he agreed to sell them to somebody else.”

He also teases the caliber of stars that had recorded stuff for the show, with familiar franchise names like Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels and Ahmed Best attached, we also heard names like Zachary Levi, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Seth McFarlane, Donald Faison and Joel McHale – that’s a lot of talent right there.

Green, on the mention of names, says: “I probably can’t confirm or deny [any names] but you literally wouldn’t believe the people that worked on this project in all categories.”

I hold out hope that someday this show will get the chance to be seen by the fans it was created for – I mean, I know I don’t understand the ins and outs of all this, but surely Disney+ would be a great place to put the show? Just crack it on there one day and let the word of mouth speak for itself. Look, we love the Star Wars Holiday Special and Detours can’t be as bad as that.

Wait… can it?

What do you all say? Would you like to see this show get the airtime it deserves? Let me know.

Meantime, enjoy the trailer:
