You may recall a while back that FX and Donald Glover, he of Community and Solo fame, were bringing us a Deadpool animates series until the rug was pulled out from under is.
But who did the pulling?
Well, at the time, FX said: “Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series.
“FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”
However, as suspected, it seems that it was Marvel that called it a day on the project.
Why? Well, FX CEO John Landgraf had this to say when asked if Deadpool is likely to ever be picked up in the future: “No. I think that Marvel will revive it, because they have the rights. They own the IP and they have the rights to do an animated adult series based on any of the X-Men characters, and based on Deadpool specifically.”
Now, are we the only ones who think this sounds like Marvel were anticipating getting Deadpool back and therefore stalled the show because they wanted to develop something themselves?
Landgraf goes on: “They [Marvel] didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen [Glover] wrote. We would have done show that Donald and Stephen wrote, but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them as did Donald and Stephen. Now it’s totally up to them whether they hire someone else to do a different show.”
We had seen and heard some of Glover’s work on the show (here) and it certainly seemed like it would have rivalled the Deadpool movies for funny and adult, so it makes us wonder what will happen when the Disney streaming service arrives… will we see Deadpool on there?
With Disney saying there’s no r-rated material coming to the service we’d have to say it may be a very difference Wade Wilson…
