Just before Halloween last year, we reported on Tim Burton diving into making a TV series with a new adaptation of The Addams Family (here) and now we know what exactly that series will be.
Not to be confused with the upcoming Addams family movie sequel (here), Burton is currently developing a Wednesday Addams series, aptly called Wednesday, with streamer Netflix.
The series will focus on the daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams and will be live-action with Al Gough and Miles Millar showrunning; it will follow Wednesday as she attends Nevermore Academy and stumbles upon a long-forgotten mystery. At the minute there are no plans for the rest of the clan to appear but I’d imagine it will be hard to not have at least some of the other Addams appear.
The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.
Tim Burton’s Batman, Beetlejuice and Ed Wood were big parts of why I became the movie fan I am today and back in the day I’d have been bouncing off the walls for this… I just hope he still has the teeth to really make a dark, gothic, darkly humourous and yet family-friendly adventure. That used to be his bread and butter… if he can tap into that, this could be a gem.
