A pretty exciting bit of casting news for HBO Max’s upcoming Titans Season 3.
The series, which had its first two seasons developed by DC Universe, is now being put together by the new streamer and, while it’s not the best thing on TV, it has a lot of potential and has been very happy – and welcomed – to bounce around in the wide DC universe.
Now we learned that Season 3 will have Jonathan Crane AKA Scarecrow as one of the protagonists and it will be played by Mad Men and Angel star Vincent Kartheiser, left.
The series will see the titular team return to Gotham City, so also expect Iain Glen’s Bruce Wayne/Batman to return as well as a host of other characters from Batman’s rogues gallery.
Hopefully, with the series now being developed by HBO Max, it can tighten the issues – and there were many – that the first two seasons had because this series has serious potential to be a real game-changer in comic book TV.
Season 3 will see the return of Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Nightwing, Anna Diop as Koriand’r/ory Anders, Teagan Croft as Rachel Roth/Raven, Ryan Potter as Gar Logan/Beast Boy, Curran Walters as Jason Todd/Red Hood, Conor Leslie as Donna Troy/Wonder Girl, Chelsea Zhang as Rose Wilson and Joshua Orpin as Conner.
It will also see Savannah Welch playing Barbara Gordon/Oracle (here).
Here’s the official announcement:
Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Scarecrow debuted in 1941’s World’s Finest Comics #3. He ultimately became one of Batman’s most prolific foes. In recent years, he has been portrayed by several actors. Cillian Murphy played him throughout Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Charlie Tahan and David W. Thompson played him across various seasons of Gotham. And an animated version was voiced by Rahul Kohli on the Harley Quinn series. Regardless of the respective acclaim in their interpretations, fans will no doubt be hoping that Scarecrow is finally utilized to his fullest, most terrifying potential in Titans season 3.
Those familiar with Kartheiser’s work will no doubt applaud the casting. Though reactions to the character of Connor on Angel were understandably mixed at the time, his performance was rarely deemed a contributing factor. And for those that it was, much like with Robert Pattinson, his body of work has been reappraised and more appreciated over time. Equally, through roles on such shows as Mad Men, the actor was able to further distance himself from his teen characters and demonstrate his true range.
It was his performance on the latter that will have fans most excited for his turn as Scarecrow. After all, as the odious Pete Campbell, he was expertly able to be equal parts unassuming, neurotically entitled, somewhat sophisticated, and borderline psychopathic. As such, he’ll no doubt be able to bring the dual personas to life in a stunning and creepy way, no matter the angle the show has ultimately settled on. As for exactly how Scarecrow will fit into proceedings (and if he will indeed contribute to Red Hood’s origin on Titans season 3), all shall become clear when the new episodes are released via HBO Max later this year.
The streets are never safe from the Prince of Panic … even if he is locked away in Arkham 😳. Please welcome Vincent Kartheiser as Dr. Jonathan Crane! #DCTitans pic.twitter.com/8RrMsJSChM
