TV Review: Todd reviews Power Rangers Super Megaforce: Silver Linings, Part 2

April 13th, 2014 by Todd Black Comments

FTN’s own resident Power Ranger Todd Black follows up his review last week of part one, see if this lives up to it!

So after a rather epic entrance to the new 6th Ranger on the Megaforce team, a lot of questions were raised. Where did he come from? How did he become a Ranger? Will he have the same powers as the others? Well in the course of “Silver Linings Part 2” we get all these answers. Here be spoilers for anyone concerned…

Some shows like to keep mysteries going for the sake of story, for better or for worse. Thankfully, we learned everything about Orion, the Silver Ranger, in a very simple and easy-to-digest way that both gave us a backstory and a foreshadowing of what’s to come.

As a character, it’s easy to sympathize with what Orion has gone through, and it’s clearly what they’re going for. The opening scenes of the armada destroying his planet were simple yet impactful, as were his scenes of survival later on. There were no major logic holes as they answered every question we could’ve had.

Yet the true fun of the episode was seeing Orion not only transform into a Legendary Ranger (in this case the Gold Ranger from Samurai) but seeing a new Zord that is deep in nostalgia. From where it came from, to how it transforms, it’s something Ranger fans of old can appreciate. And you couldn’t help but rejoice when Orion got his first true victory against the armada.

It wasn’t a perfect episode as the clichéd “we have to get the alien some new clothes and clean him up!” was played to major eye-rolling effect. Poor Jake.

In the end though, the conclusion to “Silver Linings” was very well done. Explaining what was needed, and teasing what’s to come. Orion still has a lot to learn, and as Troy wisely pointed out, his mission shouldn’t be one of vengeance. We’ll see how this plays out as the episodes continue.

4 out of 5 nerds.
