TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Krypton Season 01 Episode 03: The Rankless Initiative

April 5th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

While a little bit of a slower week, Krypton kept the momentum going in the ways that mattered in “The Rankless Initiative.” For Seg and Adam had to try and find a sentry from Brainiac, and Lyta had to lead an assault against the Rankless.

Again, it was a slower week, but the characters really held it all together. Whether he likes what’s going on in his life or not, Seg is now committed to stopping Brainiac and helping Adam save the future, and the idea of a Sentry from Brainiac running around Kandor collecting information is by and large a big blow to the future. The mystery about whether the device was activated or not was actually very compelling. You thought it was from how they shot it, but then they said it wasn’t, and then we found out it was.

Seeing Seg’s friend be infected and talk in a very Brainiac manner was very creepy. This is how Brainiac sounds, and seeing the wires plugging into her body and her eyes go block and show information on them was a very cool visual. Plus, the twist that SHE was the transmitter was very Brainiac in plan.

Meanwhile, Lyta had to fight her own battles and prove she was a worthy commander by leading a charge against Black Zero in Sector 19, which is the home of the Rankless. Here, we got to see even more of the prejudice that resides in Kandor, for Lyta had to bite her tongue in her mother’s presence while defending the Rankless, and then had to take action against one of her own when she lied about murdered an unarmed man.

There no doubt be fallout from this, and the preview for next week’s episode confirms it. So it’ll be fun to see what happens to Lyta now.

For me though, the fun part was seeing the two storylines converging. Seg didn’t know whether Lyta could be trusted because of the raid, and yet, he asked for her trust in helping his friend and stopping Brainiac. Their relationship started out very groan-worthy (because of the lore and how we know this will end up), however, I’m really warming up to it. And I hope that she gets “recruited” in the fight against Brainiac.

Finally, the Vex family has their own issues, as the Voice Of Rao isn’t content with their plans failing and Black Zero still existing. What happens next will be something to behold for sure.

Other tidbits of note include Adam really coming into his own while still being the funny guy, and the projection of Val being both advisor and funny man himself.

Sadly, it just felt that things slogged along at points, and it was obvious that the female soldier was going to disobey orders. I wish they were so on the nose about it.

Still, “The Rankless Initiative” did move things forward, and that was important. Let’s just hope they move a little farther next week.
