TV REVIEWS: FTN Reviews Krypton Season 01 Episode 05: House Of Zod

April 19th, 2018 by Todd Black Comments

Ok, that was a great twist. When I saw the previews for “House Of Zod”, and hearing the Black Zero leader saying “it’s you”, I thought for sure it was Lyta’s father saying that. After all, we haven’t met the father or heard him described. And yet, we got something a whole lot better.

“House Of Zod” delivered on many fronts, not the least of which was the struggle that Jaina faced as her daughter faced execution for a crime she didn’t commit. It was great to see her story unfold as she struggled with what she should do. Should she follow the family code? Or should she swear loyalty to the Vexes in order to save Lyta? I knew she would save her daughter, but her conviction held to the very end. And I can’t help but think that was a bit of a problem, especially when she called Lyta her “greatest shame”. If she meant that, then what was the point of saving her?

Ironically, despite it being a day to celebrate the House of El (with Action Comics #1000 coming out today), the El family had a bit of a rough time of Krypton tonight. Most of Seg’s story felt pointless up until the last 10 minutes. He goes from a Black Zero base to a cults place a couple hundred feet away? Really?

Thankfully, his speech to Lyta was very heartwarming, and it was beautiful seeing them reconnect after she saved him.

And to start a new phrase….Oh….MY…ZOD!!!! THE Zod has come to Krypton. I didn’t see that coming, it makes sense now that I think about it, but I didn’t expect it to go like this! The revelation that Zod is here in the past (which, again, makes sense) is going to shake things up in a big way.

I also want to compliment the Vexes for their roles tonight. Though I found it eye-rolling that the Sagitari that Lyta arrested just so HAPPENED to be Vex’s lover, the commitment he had to her to the end was interesting, as was his devotion to the plan to free Kandor from the Voice of Rao…if he only knew.

All in all, “The House of Zod” was another solid episode, and one that is going to send shockwaves out through the rest of the season, and we’re only 5 episodes in.

4.5 out of 5 nerds
