It’s almost ten years since we last saw Dexter Morgan (Michael C Hall) and now, with the new series nine coming later this year, we have another bit of news about who will be back or, rather, who won’t be.
You may recall just a few days ago we reported the possible return of Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan, Dexter’s smartmouth step-sister (here). Although she died in season eight, we speculated that she could return as the voice of reason in Dexter’s head.
In the series Dexter followed a thing he called Harry’s Code, which was a code his father Harry, a cop, instilled in him when he saw Dexter had a taste and a talent for murder – it resulted in Dexter speaking with his now-dead father in encounters that, to the audience, seemed real. It basically ensured Dexter only killed people who deserved it. But I speculated that, in the new series, Dexter may no longer see Harry but rather, he might see Deb as she became his moral compass in the later series.
And now, it may turn out that I’m right.
Actor James Remar who played Harry has been on Instagram, below, answering questions about the new series and he confirmed that, sadly, he’s not returning.
“I will not be back as Harry Morgan on Dexter Season 9,” Remar said.
“It’s one of the best characters I’ve ever had the chance to play. Especially season one,” he went on.
He then added a chocking bit of news that will be a bit of a letdown for a lot of fans: “They didn’t ask any of the original cast back, so I don’t know what they’re doing… I really have no idea. It’s too bad because all of us wanted to go back. But, you know, it’s their show so they’re going to do what they want to do.”
His statement that none of the cast – apart from C Hall’s Dexter, obviously, won’t be back may not include Carpenter… perhaps he’s not in touch with all of the cast, or perhaps he assumed Deb wouldn’t be back as she died.
However, it does suggest that, whatever happens, Dexter won’t be going back home to his Miami home and it will be a cast of new faces that he’s going to have to deal with this time out.
