Man, talk about bittersweet…
Over the weekend, the trailer dropped for Cobra Kai Season 6 (yes!) but it was confirmed, as we believed (and hate to admit, makes sense), that this is the last season of the hit Netflix, formerly YouTube, show.
But, it’s not all bad as the season, which will see stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka who play enemies Daniel LaRusso and Jonny Lawrence finally unite to face off against Martin Kove’s villain from the original Karate Kid movie, John Kreese, is promised as being ‘the biggest … baddest’ season yet.
But, there is more light at the end of the tunnel as creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, while calling the end ‘bittersweet’, also point out that they got to end it how they wanted and that the Miyagiverse – named after Karate Kid star Pat Morita’s Mr Miyagi – ‘has never been stronger and that they “hope to be telling more Karate Kid stories down the line”.
“Reacquainting the world with the Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor,” the trio said in a statement, click image left.
“Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members. It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted.
“Our day one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined. So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming season six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai.”
The show defined how to reboot/reimagine a series and not only stay true but actually improve on the original concept, bringing the KAr Kid universe to a whole new generation and expanding the world, still populated with the familiar faces from the previous movies, and filling it with new characters and situations that make sense and thrilled fans old and new alike.
We already know that a new Karate Kid movie is set for release in June 2024 but so far, we don’t know if it’s connected to the original movies and Cobra Kai, though it seems to us here at FTN HQ that anything else would be silly.
