WATCH: Trailer arrives for new CW DC show Black Lightning and it looks great…

We’ve been waiting to see this for a while… because, let’s be honest, a new DC TV series from The CW is a big deal.

However, while Black Lightning looks really good, it is sadly not part of the shared DC universe we love – the one consisting of Arrow, Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.

Rather, Black Lightning is a standalone series starring Cress Williams as the titular hero: the first African-American DC Super Hero to have his own stand-alone comic title, Black Lightning is based on the character created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden in 1977. Jefferson Pierce made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with one daughter hell-bent on justice and the other a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend — Black Lightning.

According to CW chief Mark Pedowitz, because the show films in Atlanta, with all the others filming in Vancouver, Canada, it is logistically impossible to tie it all together: “We do not aim to do a five-way crossover. Black Lightning, at this time, is not part of the Arrowverse. It is a separate situation.”

The trailer for the series promises a pretty serious and action-packed show that is pretty relevant in today’s world, tackling every day issues along with being a superhero: “We do not aim to do a five-way crossover,” Pedowitz went on, referring to the now annual crossover of the The CW’s DC shows.

We’re sort of hanging on the words ‘at this time’, because, while we’re excited either way, we really would love Black Lightning to exist in the world of Arrow, Flash and the rest.

As for when it will air? Well, it’s expected to arrive midseason – probably in January next year.

What do you think of the trailer and its separation from the other DC shows? Let us know…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
