We reported in February that Skydance and Netflix were bringing us a Terminator animated series (here) in the same vein as Pacific Rim: The Black which will be showrun by Mattson Tomlin.
Well, now Mattson has shared on Twitter that the writing process has begun.
While the script gives us very few clues – although dogs and growling are mentioned, this is likely because in the lore, dog are used to detect Terminators… although the fanboy in me hopes we might see Terminator dogs!
We can also see it says it’s based on the series created by James Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd.
While we know little about the series, it would be great to see the story go in exciting new directions that don’t focus on the Connor family… hopefully this show will be just that.
Yes, Netflix and Skydance are coming together to give us a new Terminator animated series and, excitingly, it’s going to be showrun by Mattson Tomlin, writer of The Batman and it’ll be made with Production IG who brought us Ghost in the Shell: SAC-2045 and Haikyuu!, so the talent is definitely there.
In Februarym Mattson said: “Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart. I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”
John Derderian, Vice President of Japan & Anime at Netflix, added: “Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”
Personally, I have felt for a long, long time that Terminator needed a change of direction – forget the story of a killer cyborg from the future trying to kill someone who will play a big role in the future and give us something new; Skynet could have sent Terminators all through time with different roles, let’s follow some of those stories and do something truly unique, I mean, time travel and killer cyborgs… the sky(net) is the limit.
Are you excited for a Terminator animated series? Let me know your thoughts, gang.
