Man, there’s a lot going on in the world of The X-Files right now and it seems like the biggest might still be to come.
When it first aired in 1993, The X-Files, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Mulder and Scully, assigned to investigating the cases on-one else want, the X-File of the title, the cases involving UFOs, aliens, ghosts, monsters and all the best stuff.
It changed TV forever and became one of the biggest shows in recent memory.
It ran for 11 seasons, had two movies, a spinoff and even tied in with another TV series, Millennium, not to mention the books, games, comics and more. Look, it was massive, ok?
New details on Ryan Coogler’s X-Files pilot… could we be seeing a theatrical release?
Skip forward to today and we’ve recently had a very cool LEGO set based on the show released, a reboot series from Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler and we’re finally getting creator Chris Carter’s 2008 movie, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, re-released as Carter originally wanted to be be as The X-Files: I Want To Believe- Vrach Frankenshteyn.
So, it’s a big time.
With the new reboot coming, we’re hearing that Duchovny and Anderson will be appearing, with Anderson recently saying: “It makes sense that [Mulder and Scully] are there for the sake of the fans. I’m not sure yet what that looks like, but I do understand why it would make sense, and it would honour what Ryan [Coogler] is doing.”
This, naturally, with Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler stepping in as the new leads, feels like a passing of the torch, having us worried that it might see the end of Mulder and Scully.
However, in a new interview, X-Files creator – and man who knows waaaay too much about stuff that hasn’t happened yet – Chris Carter wants to do his own reboot of The X-Files with Mulder and Scully.

When the original series ended in 2002, fans thought that was likely the end of the series for good but in 2016, Carter brought it back for seasons 10 and then 11, but it seems he feels there’s still a story to be finished for everyone’s favourite FBI agents: “I think I didn’t give the audience what they expected. And that is left to come. There are four episodes and the last two reboots that were all part of a bigger plan that I hope to reveal to X-Files fans if and when we should do another reboot,” he says.
“There’s a point at which you need to deliver on a promise. And I wanted to deliver more than the promise. I wanted to give them (X-Philes) what they least expected. I know that sounds somewhat confusing, but I had a bigger plan and it all made sense. It will make sense, and so hang with me.”
The addition of ‘hang with me’ at the end, to me, implies that this is something that may at least be at discussion stage and that Carter really feels could happen.
He goes on: “There was a big revelation at the end of the season finale in season 11 that Scully is pregnant. Some people were horrified, outraged. They hated me. It was big. And once again, as I say, this is taken on the chin because I have a bigger idea in mind. I think that time will tell.”
Talking about the new reboot from Coogler, Carter seems to imply that it’s not something he was consulted on or saw coming: “The thing that was unexpected, but now highly=anticipated, is the Ryan Coogler reboot. I don’t want to do anything to compete with that. I don’t want to do anything to get in the way of that. I don’t want to play off of that. I want to continue to tell and finish the story arc that I have in mind.”
This all adds to the fact that I have heard that, should Coogler’s reboot get a series treatment, Carter will be listed as an executive producer but he has not been consulted at all on the show/story. Carter himself says: “My name is on it as executive producer, but I have done exactly nothing. I am, like everyone else out there, excited about what it may be. My choice was not to read the script, because I wanted to watch it like everyone else.”
That all said, I am pretty stoked to see what Coogler does with the story and, as long as he doesn’t do anything drastic and maybe even talks to Carter, there’s no reason why both projects couldn’t co-exist.
That would be a winner for everyone, including the fans.
