Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be more adult, has a release date and there could be a comic book spin-off coming too

So, we have some pretty awesome updates for all you Zack Snyder/Justice League fans tonight… including when you can see the HBO release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

First up, much like the ultimate edition of Batman V Superman, it seems the new version will be a bit more adult and darker than the theatrical release we got from Zack Snyder – and speaking of theatrical releases, it seems we may be in for a theatrical release of this four-hour cut at some stage and, I’m hearing, a possible theatrical release of Man of Steel, Batman V Superman Ultimate Edition and this version of Justice League, yes, please!

In a new interview with EW, Snyder revealed that yes, they are hoping for a theatrical release of this version: “The movie is insane and so epic and is probably rated R — that’s one thing I think will happen, that it will be an R-rated version, for sure. We haven’t heard from the MPAA, but that’s my gut.”

Going into more detail, it seems Ben Affleck’s Batman will be so under pressure he drops an expletive and Steppenwolf will be taking no prisoners: “There’s one scene where Batman drops an F-bomb. Cyborg is not too happy with what’s going on with his life before he meets the Justice League, and he tends to speak his mind. And Steppenwolf is pretty much just hacking people in half. So [the rating would be due to] violence and profanity, probably both.”

It also seems Snyder is pushing for an  IMAX release for the movie for 2021:

Snyder feels that, while the home release is something to look forward to, he’s still keen to get it on the biggest screen imaginable, saying: “I’m a huge fan and a big supporter of the cinematic experience, and we’re already talking about Justice League playing theatrically at the same time it’s coming to HBO Max. So weirdly, it’s the reverse [of the trend].”

On top of this, it seems we all know when we can hope to enjoy the new Jusitce League cut and, thankfully, it’s not that far away:

March makes sense as it’s the fifth anniversary of the release of Batman V Superman theatrically (March 25th, 2021) but also because the director seems to favour March for his movies, with Dawn of the Dead coming out on March 10th, 2004, 300 on March 9th, 2007, Watchmen hitting on March 6th, 2009 and Sucker Punch came out on March 25th, 2011.

So I know what I’ll be watching this March… and I cannot wait!

One final note that’s pretty exciting.

We heard mumblings a while back that DC were keen to bring out a series of comic books based on Snyder’s DCEU and now we may have some details on what these may be, should they ever happen.

In a new interview on a live-stream interview with Chris Wong Swenson and Dave Pena (below), Snyder revealed that he has had discussions with DC about expanding his movies’ lore.

Snyder says he has had ongoing conversations with Chief Creative Officer and Publisher of DC Jim Lee.

“I would love to do a comic book, the post-apocalyptic Knightmare world, the world has fallen, the ragtag team that’s left alive trying to put it back,” Snyder said.

“Inside of that story, we would also do that story of Joker Killing Robin. The Joker is somehow involved in the stealing of the Mother Box and using it to create the treadmill; Cyborg is going to do the math, this is what we’re going to have to do to jump back in time and warn Bruce correctly. A lot of the conflict would be Bruce reliving the death of Robin and what went into that.”

However, as exciting as all this is, Snyder is keen to make it known that nothing is happening… yet: “I don’t think anything is going to happen right away, but Jim and I talked about it quite a bit. And talked a lot about maybe doing a book, or a comic book down the road to kind of finish this. We haven’t locked anything yet.

“Even just the death of Robin in that world would make a nice little one-off.”

Seeing the world of the Knightmare sequence from Batman V Superman realised in comicbook would be superb (I mean, obviously, we would much rather see it in live-action, but a good comic adaptation can go a long way too) and to finally see how Joker killed Robin – Dick Grayson, according to Snyder (here) – would be the absolute icing on the cake.

What say you all? Are you excited for all this news? Are you excited for Snyder’s Justice League? I want to hear it all…

Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Zack Snyder’s Justice League will premiere exclusively on HBO Max in 2021.
