Get ready for the new daily show

TMNT fans rejoice! Last Ronin and Mutant Mayhem games in development!

September 9th, 2023 by Marc Comments

It looks like we are entering the second great age of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as not one but two highly anticipated video games are on the horizon.

First up, based on the epic IDW comic series The Last Ronin, is a new game from Nickelodeon, THQ Nordic, and Black Forest Games carrying the full title of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.

The teaser trailer, below, hints at a darker, more somber tale of the last days of the Turtles, as seen in the comic series and is in development with a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC release planned.

Who is the Last Ronin? In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost. From legendary TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, get ready for the final story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, three decades in the making! What terrible events destroyed his family and left New York a crumbling, post-apocalyptic nightmare? All will be revealed in this climactic Turtle tale that sees longtime friends becoming enemies and new allies emerging in the most unexpected places. Can the surviving Turtle triumph? Collects the complete five-issue miniseries in a new graphic novel, an adventure as fulfilling for longtime Turtles fans as it is accessible for readers just discovering the heroes in a half shell.

Co-creator of the Turtles, Kevin Eastman, said of the game: “Nickelodeon, who has always been a great partner and great friend to all the things in letting us do what we do, they really didn’t wanna take The Last Ronin concept into full-on mainstream, like a big live-action movie, something to compete with Mutant Mayhem.

“They collectively came up with the idea of a video game because we could go all the way there. They could basically take it all the way into all things Ronin-verse. They’ve taken all the different drawings and moments… the stuff we’ve seen so far is goosebump city.

“It’s really phenomenal. They took stuff right out of the pages of the comic book.”

It’s unclear at the minute if the game will be an adaptation of the books or if it will be a story in that world, though Eastman’s comments would indicate it’s an adaptation, either way, it should be a blast.

But that’s not it.

Following on from the very fun movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, we learned that a TV series was in development to follow the events of the movie but it seems now that a new video game, set a few months after the movie, is coming too.

Outright Games are confirmed developing the game and have even released some very awesome concept art, below.

The game is also expected to be in the beautiful painted style of the movie, meaning it will be a delight to look at and, hopefully, play.

Doug Rosen, senior vice president of games and emerging media at Paramount, said: “the vibrancy of this new film’s animation lends itself perfectly to video games, and we can’t wait for everyone to play it.”

So, no matter how you like your Ninja Turtles, be it fun and colourful or more serious and dramatic, then there’s a game for you coming soon. Me, personally, I like them both ways, so I’ll be watching this all with great interest and keeping you all posted as I do.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram
