After Dan Aykroyd’s comments last weekend about Paul Feig doing the Ghostbusters franchise a lot of harm (here) we reckon it’s fair to assume that nothing is certain in the franchise’s future.
We do of course know that both an animated movie and series are in the works (here) but in the live-action arena, things look a little, well, less hopeful.
Aykroyd said that Feig’s reboot last year has more or less ensured a sequel would not be happening, however, it seems that Ivan Reitman, director of the original two movies and head of the Ghostbusters think tank at Sony, Ghost Corps, has ideas about where the series should go next.
And where might that be? well…
We now have two separate Ghostbusters teams that seemingly have no relationship… or do they?
Paul Feig himself has said there’s now a Ghostbusters ‘multiverse’ (here) and we know a script already exists that can tie both together (you really should read this here) and IDW’s latest Ghostbusters 101 series has indeed done just that:
But last week, during Ghostbusters Day, Reitman said that the idea at Sony may indeed be to try to tie it all together and move the franchise forward in a new direction: “It’s interesting because we’re doing a lot of work about where do we go next with Ghostbusters,” he said.
“I think one thing that fans have clearly wanted, and so did I, that somehow we tie the worlds together… I think it was a little awkward that it wasn’t connected, and we certainly heard a lot from everybody out there. So I would definitely want to connect to all of that.”
We think that, if Sony want the fans to come back after they stayed away spectacularly after Feig decided to reboot the franchise (no, not because of female Ghostbusters, even Reitman pointed out that that was all nonsense here), they need to bring back Murray, Aykroyd and Hudson in some form and tying it all together is probably the best way – don’t forget, at the end of the 2016 reboot, the team became aware of Zuul, the villain from the first movie waaaay back in 1984.
However, once again drawing from the amazing work begin done by Erik Burnham and Dan Shoening over at IDW, Reitman hinted that the future could see the ‘Busters going further than New York and travelling the globe… remember, as Venkman said in the first movie: “the franchise rights alone will make us rich beyond our wildest dreams…”
“What we’ve been doing a lot of is thinking about the franchise rights for Ghostbusters,” said Reitman, “Because Ghostbusters, that idea doesn’t have to just take place in New York, it can happen over the world. I thank it would be really cool to see Korean ghosts or Chinese ghosts. All those great traditions in the world have all these tales and things those people are afraid of. To have a sort of local group of Ghostbusters that tie with the head office in New York would be fun.”
We’re loving what we’re hearing here from Reitman (the full interview featuring him and Ernie Hudson is below) and we hope that, despite the 2016 movie being a bit of a nightmare (we didn’t hate it, ok?), we can see the Ghostbusters franchise back where it belongs, on the big screen. In live action. Being awesome.
What say you all?
