Well, I cannot lie, I did not see this coming.
Disney/Marvel has rehired James Gunn to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
The news has just broken and been confirmed with Gunn and Disney, so he’s back in the MCU.
The decision to rehire Gunn was one that was mulled and actually made months ago, following conversations with Disney studio leadership and the team at Marvel Studios. Why the change of heart? After the firing, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn met with Gunn on multiple occasions to discuss the situation. Persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation after, Horn decided to reverse course and reinstate Gunn.
Gunn made pretty vile comments on Twitter a decade ago that contained disgusting content about children and when they were dug up last year his expulsion from Disney was pretty much immediate.
My personal feelings – as someone who believes in freedom of speech completely – is that Gunn’s comments and his actions in real-life were almost definitely not connected, but when you work for the company who pretty much owns the business of children’s movies, then you have to face the consequences of your words.
Apparently Disney have agreed to allow Gunn to make Suicide Squad 2 with DC/Warners which he signed on for after his dismissal but after that, he’s back to the MCU.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
