With Godzilla: King of the Monsters currently in cinemas (it’s great fun by the way – if you’ve not seen it yet, I’d say go and have fun) we’re already looking to the next movie in the franchise.
With Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters starting the new monster verse off in style, the next movie coming on March 30th 2020 is Godzilla Vs Kong and we have the first official artwork for the movie already (above).
But, given the size of Godzilla in the latest movie and all the size Kong was in comparison in Skull Island, I can’t help feeling the fight will not be a fair one.
However, it seems that’s not the case at all.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters director and co-writer, Michael Dougherty – who also co-wrote Godzilla Vs Kong – has pointed out that Kong has a fighting chance after all.
“We’re looking at an almost David versus Goliath situation. Because everyone, the moment you say Godzilla’s going to fight Kong, your first reaction is ‘Kong doesn’t stand a chance,’” he said.
“You know, it’s like watching Rocky go up against Ivan Drago. It seems like it’s unfair—but clearly, this means the underdog might have a few surprises.”
Saying that Kong is a very intelligent foe, Dougherty said: “If you really take the time to look at Kong as a character, it’s like, ‘Okay, in Skull Island he was an adolescent, so he was still growing.’ So who knows how big he is since the 1970s when they first met him?”
And, in fairness, if you look at the artwork above, you’ll see that Kong does indeed look much bigger than the last time we saw him on Skull Island.
“It’s no accident that Kong was a direct inspiration for Godzilla, that the Japanese filmmakers watched King Kong and were hugely inspired by him,” Dougherty continues.
“The hope is that their motivations for fighting each other are sound, and not contrived. But when you have two extremely hyper-aggressive masculine territorial animals who both believe that they’re the rightful rulers of an entire species, chances are they’re going to do more than have afternoon tea.”
The Monsterverse so far is shaping up to be a very unique and different approach from what we expected and I love that.
Let’s hope they can make the next one the clash of the titans we hope it will be.
