Honestly, I don’t think I could be more excited for Sony’s new movie, Connected.

Sony Pictures Animation’s Connected is an original animated comedy from director Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls) and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie), about an everyday family’s struggle to relate while technology rises up around the world!

When Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (voiced by Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time. It’s an emotional affair that every member of the family, especially parents, can relate to! Well, this is because, one day, you’ll all get there, sending your kids off to the great big world.

Katie and Rick are joined by the rest of the family, including Katie’s wildly positive mom Linda (voiced by Maya Rudolph), her quirky little brother Aaron (voiced by Mike Rianda), and the family’s delightfully chubby pug Monchi for the ultimate family road trip. But, things start to change as the family is now confronted with the ugly reality of excessive gadget and screen use. Suddenly, the Mitchells’ plans are interrupted by a tech uprising: all around the world, the electronic devices people love – from phones, to appliances, to an innovative new line of personal robots – decide it’s time to take over. Albeit a blessing, there’s always danger to too much dependence on and use of technology, artificial intelligence, and robots.

But, what could possibly go wrong? This film is as real as it can get, as Sony Animation isn’t shying away from exposing the possible evils of too much technology. Instead of enjoying some good old family time, everyone seems to be on their mobile phones ALL. THE. TIME. All the horrors of living in a world with too much connectivity are shown, with robots taking over the world.

With the help of two friendly malfunctioning robots, the Mitchells will have to get past their problems and work together to save each other and the world!

When you walk out of the movie house, you’re surely going to thank the directors for coming up with this film. It will open your kids’ eyes to the reality of the dangers of tech obsession.

The plot is striking for children, as the whole family takes on the challenge of saving the world. Far behind this, too, is a deep message that seeks to correct people’s misuse of and over-reliance on technology.
