If Gremlins 3 ever gets made, it will not be done using CGI but practical methods says Chris Columbus

So, we all know there’s a gorgeous looking Gremlins prequel animated series set in the 1920s coming (here) but we have heard for years that a third movie has been circling the ring but has yet to sink (here) and now we have some more details on the proposed script and how it would be made.

The original 1984 classic Gremlins and its sequel, Gremlins: The New Batch, were both directed by Joe Dante but now original writer Chris Columbus – who has been working on the third movie for years (here) – has given new details on the third movie. Should it ever happen.

“I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be. I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having — you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don’t think I’d use much CGI in Gremlins 3.”

Carl Ellsworth, who has written the third script, has previously said that the movie would be more faithful to the first movie than the much more played-for-laughs sequel:  “(It) was thought of as a direct sequel mostly to the first film… I said, ‘Yeah, there’s a lot of humor in the movie, helped by the classic Jerry Goldsmith score that gives us a license to laugh, but it’s first and foremost a horror movie.’

“These little creatures—what they’re really doing, they’re cold-blooded little murderers, you know? They’re psychotic little creatures that are killing everybody. So that’s where it all started… I tried to preserve the humor, but at the same time, I was starting with the foundation of this being a horror movie, which I was really thrilled about… Gizmo was at the very core of the story; it explored more of the mythology and the history of the Gremlins.”

Now, I know the second movie has a lot of fans but, to me, the first movie was a standalone classic that the second totally missed the mark on, so a follow-up to the first would be very welcome in my eyes.

What say you all? I want to hear your thoughts, gang…
