After years of anticipation and little more than teases, the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series from Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation is finally set to be unveiled, with a first look confirmed for this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, taking place June 21 through 27 in Annecy, France.
The reveal will come as part of a packed showcase of high-profile animation previews, with Ghostbusters appearing alongside titles like Pixar’s Gatto, Disney’s Hexed, and Skydance Animation’s Ray Gunn, writes Jason over at Ghostbusters News.
Originally announced during the 2022 Ghostbusters Day celebration, details on the series have remained largely under wraps, with it classified as children’s programming and described as a “fresh story” for all ages. During a private presentation at Annecy last year, Dominique Bazay of Netflix teased it as “Ghostbusters as you’ve never seen it,” with early concept art reportedly depicting four young heroes.

As part of that presentation, it was also confirmed that the series is being led by Ben Hibon, who serves as executive producer and showrunner. Known for his work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Star Trek: Prodigy, Hibon previously outlined his creative direction for the project:
“Ghostbusters has always been a really surprising blend of horror, comedy, sci-fi, and fantasy. We want to keep the character and the story totally grounded in a time and place that felt real. It has grit, it has texture, it has vibrancy.”
Exciting new details on Netflix’s animated Ghostbusters movie and series
While still unconfirmed, recent reports from industry insider Jeff Sneider suggest the series is set in the 1990s during Walter Peck’s first run at New York City mayor. As with all early leaks, that remains firmly in speculation territory for now.
Last spring, Australia-based Flying Bark Productions confirmed its involvement in the series. Known for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Glitch Techs, and the just-released Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, the studio called the project a “premium animated Ghostbusters series,” while the filmmaking duo of Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan will serve as executive producers.
