We have our first look, below, at Colin Farrell’s Oswald Copplepot AKA The Penguin in the standalone series being developed by HBO Max – now just MAX.
The series will pick up after the events of Matt Reeves’ The Batman and will follow Penguin’s further attempts to get revenge and take control of Gotham City.
Matt Reeves recently said of the series: “We’re doing this Penguin series and one of the great things about that is Colin Farrell – he’s like you’ve never seen him.
“He’s so incredible and he’s a scene-stealer. Along the way, we thought maybe we could do [it] as a series… So I talked to HBO Max and showed them Colin in the movie and spoke to them about what this could be and they said, ‘Let’s do it.’”
Reeves also said recently that the Penguin series will have an impact on The Batman sequel and will lead directly into it: “There’s actually a whole little fabric of things we’re wanting to do, the way we’re doing with [the] Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be.
“There are some other things we have planned too. The BatVerse of what we’re doing has me very, very excited, and I’m very passionate about it. So I’m excited.”
Farrell himself too gave us a breakdown of what the show will be recently, saying: “It’s going to be an eight-part thing. Around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed. Matt’s idea was to have the Penguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film. And if it works, if the trajectory is interesting, and the audience goes for it, and we do our jobs right, the second Batman feature will pick up where the HBO show will end.”
While I didn’t love The Batman as much as some previous Batman movies, there was certainly enough to like that I’m looking forward to this in 2024 and then The Batman 2 in 2025, we really live in a time of universe building and as long as it’s good, I say bring it all on.
The new Max Original Series from Matt Reeves and the next chapter in The Batman saga is now in production. Coming in 2024 to Max.
