A little over a week ago I reported that Ryan Reynolds had revealed he was writing a new Deadpool project that he called “a little something… an ensemble”, however, Deadpool creator Rob Leifeld pointed out that Reynolds is currently developing a movie called Boy Band and this is what he was referring to and not a Deadpool movie.
However, it now seems that it WAS a Deadpool movie after all.
Last Summer, Deadpool & Wolverine broke the $1bn mark at the box office and proved that moviegoers are still there, they just need the right movie, you know, something they want to see, so it’s not a big surprise that Reynolds and Marvel want more of the Merc with the mouth on the big screen.
Ryan Reynolds discusses Deadpool’s MCU future and teases he’s writing a new project for him UPDATED
Although, this seems to be Reynolds developing it himself at this stage, with Marvel yet to be involved.
According to THR, ‘Reynolds is exploring ideas for a Deadpool movie that would feature X-Men characters‘.
They go on to say that he’s ‘working on various treatments for an ensemble film featuring three or four X-Men characters. Deadpool would of course appear, but perhaps only as a supporting player. Reynolds is said to believe that keeping his f-bomb wielding anti-hero more on the sidelines could allow for the X-Men characters to be used in unexpected ways. Reynolds has been open about every Deadpool movie needing a strong reason to exist, and it’s possible this could provide the avenue he needs.’

Reynolds, in a recent interview, highlighted the fact that Deadpool, by his very nature, is a secondary character for the most part and even with the new project featuring X-Men, much like the other three Deadpool movies so far, Deadpool will probably not make it onto the team: “If [Deadpool] becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end,” Reynolds said last week, adding, “That’s wish fulfilment, and we can’t give him that.”
The new report is keen to point out that, as of now, this is an idea Reynolds is developing himself, with the plan being to take it to Marvel eventually: ‘It’s extremely early days and far from becoming a reality, and Reynolds is working separate from the studio at this stage. It’s not unusual for Reynolds to go through many iterations before landing on the right idea.’
It should be pointed out that Marvel are currently bringing the Fox X-Men into the MCU, for what purpose exactly remains to be see as of right now, and they will play a big part in Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently filming, they’re also developing a standalone X-Men movie, so all this will likely dictate just what Reynolds will be allowed to do with the X-Men characters from the past – but he’s played with many of them before, so he knows what he’s doing and you’d have to imagine that, even working without Marvel on this one, he’s got an idea what the plan is over all for the MCU and the X-Men.
You’d imagine.
Right?
Anyway, an X-Men and Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds at the helm? Are you in? Let me know…
