There are five Transformers movies in development? Michael Bay returning?

June 28th, 2025 by Marc Comments

When I reported last week on the plans seemingly being cancelled for a Transformers: One sequel (here), I thought things were looking bad for the future of Transformers on the big screen, after all, we haven’t heard much about the Transformers/GI Joe crossover movie recently either.

However, when I reported on the potential Energo Universe series today (here) I had a little more hope that Transformers wasn’t dead after all.

If this new report is accurate, it seems that Transformers is VERY much still alive on the big screen.

Wait, we’re getting a Bumblebee sequel AND a sequel to Transformers: The Last Knight?

First of all, it seems that Michael Bay, who directed five live-action Transformers movies between 2007 and 2017, is returning to the franchise after an eight-year hiatus.

Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this. Bay’s last movie, Transformers: The Last Knight, was far from great but, irritatingly, it ended on a cliffhanger involving Unicron, so many hoped that, at the very least it would get that storyline wrapped up, but when Bumblebee came out in 2018, it was clear that Bay’s universe was no longer where the movies took place.

That said, in 2019, Transformers producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura said that a Bumblebee sequel and a Last Knight sequel were both in development: “We are already working on two projects and both have scripts under development. One is the latest in the main family series following the events of Transformers: The Last Knight and the other is a sequel to Bumblebee,”  he said.

Looks like the Transformers: One sequel is no longer happening

Well, Rise of the Beasts was a sequel to Bumblebee in 2023, so maybe his prediction about the Bay sequel was right after all.

That said, I’m hearing that Bay has pitched a completely new idea, so it may not be a sequel.

On top of this, Josh Cooley, the director of Transformers: One, who announced that the sequel wasn’t happening, is apparently being given a live-action movie now instead.

Then there’s the Rise of the Beasts sequel, which is the Transformers/GI Joe crossover, and finally, there are two other movies in development about which no details are known.

Kirkman and Skybound developing Energon Universe animated series?

So in summary, we’re getting:

Michael Bay’s live-action movie
A live-action film from Josh Cooley
A Transformers/GI Joe crossover
Two additional projects in the early stages

Is it possible that the Energon series, which features Transformers and GI Joe, is causing issues with the crossover movie? I guess we’ll know eventually.

As it is, I am looking forward to new Transformers content and I really do hope the Last Knight story gets wrapped up but, if I had to pick the movie I wanted most, it would be the Transformers: One sequel, but I guess I’m not a big studio head, so it doens’t really matter what I want.

So, five new Transformers big screen projects are in the planning stages. Are you excited?

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
