For a number of years, I have been reporting on a fifth entry in the Lethal Weapon movie series and it has mostly seemed like it might happen with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover both keen to return as Riggs and Murtaugh with Gibson also directing, but now it seems like it may not happen.
Just to be clear, Lethal Weapon 4 was a quarter of a century ago and with Glover now 79 years old and Gibson 70, it’s really starting to look like it won’t happen. And probably that’s ok.
In a recent interview with Allan Unger, who is a friend of Gibson’s and directed his 2022 movie, Bandit, shared an update on the fifth movie and how likely it is to happen.
“I ended up speaking with Mel quite a bit about his intentions for the fifth one,” Unger says, “He’s always had a plan. I think his plan right now, though, is to get back into the Passion of the Christ [sequel], which is shooting in Italy, so I think he’s going to be busy with that for a while.”
Gibson is currently filming The Resurrection of the Christ, with Jaako Ohtonen stepping into Jim Caviezel’s, em, sandals, as Jesus, which is now set to be two movies releasing on Good Friday (March 26th) 2027 and then forty days later on Ascension Day (May 6th), so he’s not going to be worrying about Lethal Weapon until, at the very earliest, next summer.
Ungar goes on to say what we’re all thinking: “I don’t know if we’ll ever see Lethal Weapon 5, but I also don’t know, I don’t know that we need to see it… [Lethal Weapon 4] kind of wrapped it up quite poignantly.”
Lethal Weapon 4 did, indeed, have a wonderful ending that really gave all the characters the happy ending they deserved, and perhaps another movie is a bad idea. That said, Unger is right when he says that Gibson has always had a plan for the fifth movie, but it seems that maybe obstacles and time have gotten the best of the franchise.
Do you want to see Riggs and Murtaugh as retired old men? Thoughts, I know you have them, and I wanna hear ‘em all.
