With Doctor Who no longer doing it’s cinematic episode poster releases like they did for series 7, it’s been left up to RadioTimes artist Stuart Manning to deliver – and this week’s is a particular delight.
Episode 4 of series 8 is more of a conceptual think piece than it is your standard aliens/time travel/run away from monsters fare, so it was difficult for the artist to produce a poster to sum up the episode’s themes.
“This is an interesting episode to try and sum up visually, as it’s about as far away from kitsch as you’re likely to get. I love the posters from things like Rosemary’s Baby and Halloween – just a foreboding image that gives your imagination a place to start before viewing. So, in the end, I went with a slightly abstract, less literal image – somewhere between a 70s horror film and an 80s video nasty. Imagine it on VHS after dark with lots of drop-out.”
He’s certainly nailed the tone he was going for – we love the aged creases in the poster as though its been folded up – while the actual image is reminiscent of the final scene of Cabin in the Woods with a certain Dawn of the Dead vibe.
Doctor Who series 8 continues with Listen this Saturday at 7:30 on BBC 1.
