Big Finish Productions’ ongoing Doctor Who audio series, The Diary of River Song, is fast approaching its fifth volume and it looks like it’s going to be a real – cough – Master class.
Doctor Who Magazine has confirmed that three previous Masters (well, technically One is Mistress) will be returning to their audio adventures in the shape of Geoffrey Beevers (1970), Derek Jacobi (2007) and Michelle Gomez (2016) and joining them will be the one and only Eric Roberts who played The Master in the Movie (1996).
The man who brought Doctor Who back in 2005, Steven Moffat, had considered bringing Roberts back as The Master as he was the last person to play the character before her returned in the form of John Simm to face David Tennant’s timelord, but Moffat just didn’t think he was the right choice: “I like that TV movie and I liked him as the Master, I thought he was funny,” said Moffat at the time.
“But he’s not part… and sometimes this just happens… he’s not part, somehow, of anyone’s pantheon of Doctor Who. Not because he didn’t do well – he did do it well – and not because that film isn’t good – it is quite good – it’s just not really there.”
Fair enough.
But if you agree or not, Roberts is returning to the role thanks to Big Finish and we’re pretty excited!
Confirmed in @DWMtweets, Michelle Gomez and Eric Roberts will both reprise their incarnations of the Master (alongside Beevers and Jacobi) for The Diary of River Song Volume 5 for January 2019.
