Create a comic with the help of World Book Day

February 19th, 2013 by Marc Comments

We’ve all gone to the stands to pick up Green Lantern #17, Nova #1 and Superior Spider-Man #4, just a couple of the new releases from the likes of Marvel and DC Universe. Now it’s our turn to create a character whose adventures will capture the imaginations of millions.

World Book Day, the largest celebration of the written word and reading in the UK will be taking place on 7 March. However, it’s not just about encouraging children to read, it also aims the enthuse people to pick up a pen and create a story. Storycraft is one part of World Book Day where you can unleash the inner illustrator you know you have in you somewhere. In this section you will find that ten authors and illustrators from Liz Pichon to Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell have come together to offer advice to help you tap into your creative side.

With all of these authors and illustrators documenting their advice in inspiring videos, not only will you be able to gain all the knowledge needed to create a comic strip in digestible chunks, you will hopefully also gain the inspiration required to kick start your comic strip. From learning how to use illustration to support a story to how to write and plan a ‘comic’ style story you will have the tools necessary to pen your thoughts and ideas.

There’s no harm in creating a story based on the comics that you love and know intimately. Whether you’re a fan of Dark Horse Comic’s Game of Thrones or IDW Publishing’s GI Joe, use these formulas and build upon them; after all it is these formulas that have worked on an immense scale.

World Book Day gives you the perfect excuse to put all of your knowledge into practice and come up with an inspiration strip to be proud of. Why not get your friends and family involved as well? Encourage them to read and talk about the comics you love so much – sharing ideas will only make your comic strip stronger.

However, if you’re looking for an event that will enable you to archive an additional comic strip for free then Free Comic Book Day is what you’re looking for. On 4 May comic books will be offered absolutely free in participating stores across the world. Looking at the comics available to you, collectors are sure to have a field day. From DC NATION SUPER SAMPLER #1 and WALKING DEAD SPECIAL (NET) (MR) to SUPERMAN SPECIAL EDITION there is a strip for everyone.

2013 is the year of the comic book and could be the year that you write your own. Absorb all the advice and information you can from World Book Day’s Storycraft and work from your own collection at home to create an unforgettable story.

Create a comic with the help of World Book Day has been written by fancy dress retailer AFD who stocks a vast range of superhero costumes, and could one day be stocking an outfit based on the comic you create.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
