When we last left Element and Chaos they were just entering our world. Unsure of what to do with themselves in their downtime, in issue #1, we find our heroes atop their Watchtower contemplating their existence and their true purpose in our world. Being all-powerful beings might sound like a good time, but with it comes a certain responsibility to carry out the tasks they perform for their city and they’re happy to do it. The problem lies with what they believe their responsibilities are. Should they just remain silent Guardians, protecting the humans around them while remaining mysterious and sometimes scary? Or should they walk amongst the people and make an effort to fit in with their surroundings? They don’t have much time to walk around with their heads in the clouds though, as their very first nemesis, Tempest comes blowing into the city!

I really enjoy the duality Todd Black has injected into his heroes. While one takes the Superman choice by wanting to become one of the people, the other takes the opposite approach. The real brilliance is that while one wants to be anti-social, he too agrees that they may be destined for something more. I really hope Todd explores the differences between the Light and the Dark with the possible introductions of more Almighty characters into this world. The people prayed for the Guardians, who’s to say that there aren’t evil entities wanting the exact opposite? I love how the Guardians are sent from heaven, but not being angels totally opens up the universe for an infinite number of stories and adventures.

Alex Garcia sold me on his art in this issue. The Guardians aren’t just dealing with street-level criminals in this issue, so we really get to see some cosmic powers on display. As I said before, there are an infinite amount of tales that can be told and I think Garcia is just showing us the tip of the iceberg of what this creative team is truly capable of.

If you’re still on the fence about reading this series you can check it out for free right now! Todd Black has the #0 issue on their website (http://guardians-comic.com/) for free right now, so you have no excuses not to check it out! While there are a TON of superhero books out, none of their writers have a fraction of the enthusiasm Todd Black has for this project and that alone makes it worth checking out. There’s a ton of potential for this series to do amazing things and you’ll want to get in on the ground floor of it before it takes off!
