Imagine Agents #1
Written by Brian Joines
Artist: Bachan
Colorist: Ruth Redmond
Letterer: Deron Bennett
Published by BOOM! Studios

Imaginary friends are often a rite of passage for those of us who are considered ‘loners’ in today’s society. They give us someone to play with, talk to, and talk about our problems with when no one else will listen. Eventually though, real friends are made, there are new adventures to be had, we grow up, and we move on leaving our imaginary friends behind us. The agents of I.M.A.G.I.N.E. give these long-forgotten creatures refuge after they’ve served their purpose in the world, but what happens when these imaginary beasts don’t accept this fate? Revolution…and a damn fun one at that!

This is my first venture into a BOOM! title and I couldn’t be more happy with the results. I always brushed aside these titles as ‘kiddish’ and never gave them a second thought. Brian Joines not only has my attention with Imagine Agents, but I’m interested to dive deeper into the BOOM! catalogue! This story is all kinds of zany fun but is also injected with just enough sincerity to tug on your heart strings to make you emotionally invested in the story. I could read Joines’s written banter between the two agents for pages and pages and would never stop being entertained by it!

The art in this book REALLY has me kicking myself. I always bunched BOOM! books together with the Adventure Time! genre. (Which some people love, but it just isn’t for me!) The art in Imagine Agents is absolutely stellar. The colors and images just seem to jump off of every page and rarely have I seen comic book art look so clean and precise. I’m sure as we dive deeper into the story the art team is going to have the chance to really flex their creative muscles and I can’t wait to see the results!

Don’t make the same mistake I did and brush off titles just because of who publishes it. This book deserves to be talked about and read by anyone who enjoys a genuinely fun and sincere story. I plan on recommending it to absolutely anyone who will listen to me, so if you’re reading this, go buy a copy or download it on Comixology now!
