This Bites #1 Review
Written by Jacques Nyemb
Artist: David Degrand
Letterer: Marc Jackson

One of my favorite things about being someone who reviews and covers all aspects of the comic book industry is coming along and finding fantastic indie books to read. Being with FTN has opened that door wide open and the opportunity has presented itself more and more. Such is the case with This Bites.

Indie creator Jacques Nyemb tells a story of Jasper, a lifelong vegan who works at a vinyl records shop whose life changes in an instant…he’s bitten by a vampire. (It seems that in this world vampirism is a well known condition people have!) Will Jasper be able to stick to his vegan lifestyle or will he succumb to his baser instincts of vampirism and feed on those around him? It’s worth sticking with this series to find out.

What Nyemb has crafted here is a very fun, lighthearted tale based around what could be a very dark theme. In an industry filled with numerous well done vampire books, it’s refreshing to see someone take the genre in a direction it hasn’t been before. With a few slight tweaks, this series seems like it could be easily adapted into a fun, all-ages cartoon. It’s a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously and that tone carries itself out perfectly to give us a story that I personally really enjoyed reading.

The tone of the book is perfectly conveyed through the art. It’s simple, lighthearted, and really looks like something you would see on Cartoon Network on Saturday mornings. I absolutely love that. David Degrand obviously has the skills to illustrate comics for a living and I can’t wait to see more from him!

This Bites uses the ‘pay what you want’ method when you purchase the book. (And you should definitely do so, buy it here.) Indie comics are the life-blood of our industry and when creative teams put out a product like this it HAS to be supported. It’s fun, original, and fresh. Quite frankly, our industry needs more books with the tone This Bites sets. So for anyone looking to read something and just genuinely have a good time with it, This Bites is the book for you!
