DC’s Elseworlds imprint returns with a new Gotham By Gaslight book and more!

November 23rd, 2023 by Marc Comments

Very exciting news for older DC fans as it seems that the Elseworlds line of books is coming back and not only that, but a new Gotham By Gaslight book is coming!

Gotham by Gaslight and its sequel, Master of the Future (1989 and 1991) saw a Victorian-era Batman take on Jack the Ripper and the advancement of a world overcome with technology and were an absolute pinnacle – especially Gotham By Gaslight, drawn by Mike Mignola – in Batman’s career and, along with Batman the movie ins 1989, became a cornerstone of my love for the Dark Knight.

The Elseworlds books, of which they were part, took familiar heroes and put them in worlds and times that were new and strange, it was a fun time for DC comics and sadly it died out in the 1990s but, yes!, they’re coming back and a new Gotham by Gaslight book is leading the charge.

The new book, called Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age from Andy Diggle and Leandro Fernandez and will see this Batman putting together a Victorian Justice League! This is a world and a version of Batman that I cannot wait to jump back in to.

But that’s not all, there’s a whole new batch of Elseworlds tales coming too: Greg Smallwood’s six-issue Batman the Barbarian, Clay and Seth Mann’s six-issue Batman: Nightfire, and the seven-issue Green Lantern: Dark from Tate Brombal and Werther Dell’Edera.

We’re also getting sequels to existing books in the form of Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter from Jay Kristoff and Tirso Cons, and  DC vs. Vampires: World War V from Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt.

While the Eleseworlds of old were usually one-shots, it’s interesting to note that these are limited series, meaning the worlds will be bigger and hopefully more flashed out. I’m wondering if Elseworlds is being brought back to tie in with James Gunn and Peter Safrans’s upcoming DCU which Gunn has said will have Elseworlds movies which are not related to the mainline of movies but rather will be standalone, fresh takes… Joker and it’s upcoming sequel are expected to be Elseworlds books.

Whatever it is, as someone who became a DC fan in the late 80s, this is an imprint I cannot wait to see return!

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter, InstagramYoutube, Bluesky,

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
