With the big announcement earlier that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will be directing the first Star Wars spin-off, a little something may have gotten lost in the mix.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, not only will Edwards return for a second Godzilla film, but a third one as well! They add that while story ideas do exist, Godzilla 2 is still in early development and doesn’t even have a script yet. Earlier in the week, we got word of a sequel, but this is the first mention of a third and Edwards’ confirmed involvement.
In a perhaps ill timed statement Star Wars news Legendary Entertainment’s chairman and CEO Thomas Tull said:
“Gareth’s filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation’s most creative and visionary directors. The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”
To think that Edwards went from Monsters, a film he shot on a $500,000 budget, to Godzilla which was a box-office hit, and now he’s attached to direct not only a Star Wars film but 2 more Godzilla films.
Well done sir, I can’t wait to see them all!
