Jon Spaihts to script Doctor Strange

June 19th, 2014 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Earlier this month we got word that Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose helmer Scott Derrickson will be directing Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange. Now according to Deadline, Jon Spaihts is in negotiations to rewrite the screenplay. The first draft of the script was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

Spaihts is writing Universal’s The Mummy reboot as well as the The Darkest Hour and The Black Hole, but he is probably best known as the first writer of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus.

The trade adds that Marvel hopes to get a script and to fast track production. The short list of candidates to play Strange are said to include Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy and Jared Leto.

Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the character in 1963 as brilliant neurosurgeon who, following a car accident loses precision in his hands. His quest to regain his former skills sets Strange on a path to become the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats, with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts.

Although no release date for Doctor Strange has been announced, Marvel has two placeholder dates set for unknown projects on July 8th, 2016 and on May 5th, 2017.
