Lightyear 2 Speculation

July 27th, 2022 by Clark Kent Comments

The 17th of June saw the release of Lightyear, and since then fans have eagerly anticipated the series’ next release. Lightyear is based on Buzz Lightyear, a character from the Toy Story franchise. In the film, Buzz and his first captain find themselves stranded on a distant planet, and he embarks on a journey to find a way back home. Given the connection between Lightyear and Toy Story, one of the most successful films of all time, it is unsurprising that there is so much speculation about Lightyear 2.

Should We Expect a Lightyear 2?

The short answer is that we don’t know. There has been no confirmation from Disney or Pixar that a second Lightyear film is in the works. However, this doesn’t mean one isn’t being developed behind the scenes. Toy Story 4 was announced shortly after the release of Toy Story 3, and it is likely that if Disney is working on a Lightyear 2, they will keep it under wraps until they are ready to make a formal announcement. Based on the first film’s ending, it seems likely that a sequel could be on the cards.

What Could Lightyear 2 Be About?

There are several possibilities for what a second Lightyear film could entail. The most obvious option is that the sequel would focus on Buzz’s return to Earth. However, given that the first film ended with Buzz and his captain finding a way back to their home planet, the sequel could explore what life is like for Buzz on his home planet. Another possibility is that Lightyear 2 could be a prequel, exploring the events that led to Buzz and his captain being stranded on a distant planet.

Cameos

It is also worth noting that the Lightyear franchise is set in the same universe as the Toy Story franchise and if you believe some theories, the greater Pixar universe. It means we could see some cameo appearances from characters from the Pixar films in Lightyear 2. While nothing has been confirmed, it would be a fun way to tie these franchises together. According to this graphic from the Australian comparator Compare the Market, fans would love a cameo from Wall-E, considering he is the most searched character from the Pixar films.

If Wall-E does make a cameo, he could feature as part of a rescue mission to save Buzz and his captain. This would tie in nicely with the plot of the first Lightyear film.

Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc. could also make a cameo appearance as he is one of the most popular Pixar characters.

Possible Release Date

The production of Lightyear started in 2016 and took four years before Pixar officially shared the news. It took two years to complete production and then release the movie. So if we take this as a rough guide, we should expect Lightyear 2 to be released no earlier than 2024.

This is all speculation at the moment, and we will have to wait for an official announcement from Disney before we know if Lightyear 2 is in the works. In the meantime, fans can enjoy rewatching the first film and hoping that their favorite characters make an appearance in the sequel.
