It looks like another round of layoffs has hit LucasFilm as Disney continues to trim the fat from its latest acquisition.
Deadline is reporting that another two dozen or more employees have been handed pink slips.
The cuts don’t seem to have come from any of creative departments so there is that at least, though in this day and age it sucks that anyone has to lose a job, the report states that those without jobs at LucasFilm now came from the financing, licensing and distribution side of things.
This comes on the heels of a previous round of layoffs at LucasFilm Animation as well as the closure of the video game department, LucasArts.
Though the feedback from the general public has been negative, I really can’t fault Disney for most of these moves.
For one, LucasArts hasn’t really done much in the last decade or so aside from the Force Unleashed games and a current-gen update of the classic Monkey Island games.
I can’t even imagine the game studio was generating enough revenue to keep the doors open. Similarly with the layoffs at LucasFilm Animation with no new projects currently in production there is probably no reason to keep paying people not to work. Don’t think that this is strictly a LucasFilm issue though as the report states that 150 Disney employees have been let go as well.
The bleeding should stop soon as LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy has stated the restructuring should be completed by the end of April.
