Guardians of the Galaxy gets a new cast member

The Collector

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ophelia Lovibond has a supporting role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. This is the second bit of casting news this week, as we also learned that Michael Rooker is cast as Yondu. The film is part of Marvel’s phase two of its superhero film slate and is directed by James Gunn. The British actress has appeared in Mr. Popper’s Penguins and No Strings Attached.

Details of Lovibond’s role are scarce but it is known that she will play an aide to a near-immortal being called The Collector. This is the first time we’ve heard his name mentioned. He also has links to both the Guardians and Thanos.

According to the Marvel Database:

“Like all the Elders of the Universe, the origin of the Collector is lost in antiquity. What is known is that he is one of the oldest living beings in the universe, having been among the first of the universe’s races to become sentient in the wake of the Big Bang. Over the eons, the Collector’s monomania became more and more obsessive; making him lose sight of the original reason for which he began his collection.”

It looks like Marvel is going all in on cosmic and I love it.

A June production start date is being readied and Disney has already set an August 1, 2014 release date.
