So, apart from being a long-awaited return to form for the MCU and featuring two of the most inspired bit of comic book movie castings of all time in the form of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, Deadpool & Wolverine brought back some of our favorite actors in iconic Marvel roels but it also gave us a bit of casting that, despite almost happening numerous times, never got its own movie.
Yes, we had Wesley Snipes’ return as blade, which was awesome – bring him into the MCU as Blade, Marvel, he’s still got the magic – and the return of Jennifer Garner as Electra but, for the first time, we got Channing Tatum as Remy Etienne LeBeau AKA Gambit and it was a long road to get there.
The cajun card-playing superhero was one that Tatum had hoped for years to bring into Fox’s X-Men universe (Taylot Kitsch played him in X-Men: Origins and was pretty great FYI) and it almost happened numerous times with various writers and directors attached over the years, however, with Tatum getting older and Fox being bought over by Disney, it seemed it was a dream not meant to be.
However, Ryan Reynolds saw potential and brought Gambit – and Tatum into Deadpool & Wolverine and a new fan-favourite was born.
Tatum, as well as praising Reynolds for bringing the character to the screen with him in the role, has revealed that he’s not only prepared to do what it takes to make a movie happen but he has chatted to Marvel boss Kevin Feige about it becoming a reality: “I would do lots of terrible things to make that happen,” the star has said.
“From your mouth to God’s ears. Write it into existence, please. I’ve been saying I want it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God. Write it into existence, friend.”
But now, a deleted scene from the movie SPOILERS reveals that Gambit did not die in the battle against Cassandra Nova’s henchmen and women and not only that, but he’s heading back to his own universe.

But what does this mean? Well, there’s no arguing that the MCU has massively expanded recently with not just Wolverine, Deadpool, Blade and Electra but we’ve also seen Kelsey Grammar’s Beast appear in The Marvels and both Andrew Garfield and Toby Maguire’s Spider-men (mans?) appear in Spider-man: No Way Home, so having Gambit appear in future movies as the MCU Gambit or the Fox universe’s Gambit is now not only possible but it’s likely.
So, we could now see an MCU where our favourite past heroes – Wolverine, Spider-man, Blade – could become as much a mainstay as Robert Downey Jnr’s Iron Man or Chris Hemsworth’s Thor; love them or loathe them, you can’t argue with the amazing world the MCU movies have created for fans.
