Ok, who’s seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Ok, you five that haven’t? Don’t read this until you have
MAJOR SPOILERS!
At the end of The Winter Soldier S.H.I.E.L.D is gone, having been revealed as a Hydra-run organisation that was always working for a bigger purpose than world peace. So, with Agent Coulson and his team still in the air, where do they go now? Personally, I really hope we get a Joss Whedon-esque twist and discover several members of the team are, in fact, bad guys. It would make sense, Hydra would want agents in every team, no?
Any, sorry, I digress…
Executive Producer Maurissa Tancharoen has spoken with USA Today about just that: “Survival is a huge part of it. There is no more tapping into big S.H.I.E.L.D. through the holo-comm. The guns you have on the plane are the guns you have. They’re basically left with the bare minimum.”
Other Executive Producer Jed Whedon built on this, by adding: “Now they really are a ragtag bunch scraping things together.”
They also hinted that much of what we’ve seen so far will tie into the Hydra plot in unexpected and big ways. Coulson himself, Clark Gregg says that we will see a massive change in Coulson after this all comes out: “a company man who finds out that everything he’s dedicated his life to is not what he thought it was. To have everything dissolve around him to the point that S.H.I.E.L.D. itself is in smoking ruins (and have) that crisis of faith is such an amazing thing to explore.”
Regarding the mixed reviews and fan reactions on the series (although they have picked up considerably over the last few episodes), Tancharoen says: “Hopefully people who’ve had mixed feelings about the show will now understand it was all part of a big plan.”
Darkhorizons are reporting that things are moving ahead nicely on Captain America 3 (Captain America: The Winter soldier 2?) with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely: still in the early days of the script, the pair have been working on the project since late last year. Ideas are being thrown around and tested, and it’s “coalescing into the movie it’s supposed to be”. They’ve also read Joss Whedon’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” script and are happy with where Captain America is when the film ends.
At present, they don’t know how big of a role the Winter Soldier will have in the third film and they want to make sure no-one overshadows the Captain himself. They’ve also deliberately setup some threads in ‘Winter Soldier’ that they intend to continue on with.
