Some interesting tidbits for all the X-Files fans on here today…

With the new mini-series set to land in January, rumours have started to emerge that The X-Files is back in a big way that will go beyond the six episodes airing in 2016. And how’s this? Could we be getting a spin-off based on Flash’s Robbie Amell and Six Feet Under‘s Lauren Ambrose agents Mills and Einstein?

X-Files creator Chris Carter, when asked about the rumour, was careful not to deny it would happen:  “Right now I’m focused on doing the show with David [Duchovny] and Gillian [Anderson].”

However, he did say it wasn’t part of the plan when the series was restarted: “People can speculate, but [their pacts] weren’t negotiated that way.”

Talking about the show itself, Carter said that, while he did get MOST of the original cast and crew back, there were four he really wanted but couldn’t get including executive producers Frank Spotnitz and Vince Gilligan. (The former was working on Amazon’s Man in the High Castle, the latter on Breaking Bad spin-off  Better Call Saul.)

On the acting front, he really wanted Robert Patrick to return as Agent Doggett and James Pickens Jr as Kersh (both pictured below) back, but their acting gigs on Scorpion and Grey’s Anatomy made it impossible.

And finally, it seems that there was very, very nearly a seventh hour made: “It was almost about to happen,” Carter says.

“We were planning for it. The script was written. I even called people to find out if they were available to direct, and it just didn’t happen.”

It would have been a standalone penned by a pair of X-Files neophytes: “I created an opportunity for two writers that I am close with to write a spec script. If there are more X-Files to be made, certainly it will be one of those.”

If there are more X-Files? Well, we can hope…

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny return with Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood and will be joined by Joel McHale, Annet Mahendru, Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose.

The X-Files return with a special two-night event on Sunday, January 24th and Monday, January 25th.
