Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn recently sat down with Empire and offered some insight of what fans can expect in the sequel including addressing the identity of the protagonist Peter “Starlord” Quill’s father. This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise considering the teasing nature of the ending of the first film and the fact he has already mentioned before that he will play an important part in the sequel.
However, one interesting aspect of Gunn’s chat is the revelation that the story arc including Peter Quill’s father will not follow the comic book canon. James Gunn – who is returning to direct and write the screenplay for the second installment – had this to say: “It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much.”
To those who are less familiar with the comic books, Star-Lord’s dad is a esoteric and elusive character know as J’son, who is more commonly referred to as Jason of Spartax – the Emperor of the Spartoi Empire. For anybody who is interested in checking out the character, head over to Marvel’s website for a more resound description of the character.
Thanos fans may also be slightly disappointed to learn that Gunn’s inclusion of the character will be on a strict basis of whether it is conducive to facilitating the Guardians 2 story arc or not. Gunn had this to say on the issue: “He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos.”
No doubt there will be a miscellany of details trickling out really soon as a sufficient amount of work has already begun on the Guardians sequel and development is full steam ahead. Stay tuned for more goodies.
