Amazon/MGM happy with Masters of the Universe performance… more to come?

While the box office for Masters of the Universe is looking pretty disappointing, it seems that the franchise may still have legs and we could yet see this version of He-Man, Skeletor, and the others back in the near future…

So, with the movie making approx $30m (domestic) on its opening weekend, with an estimated $170 m budget, it’s not exactly the sort of numbers modern summer blockbusters would consider, em, blockbusting, but it seems that Amazon/MGM, who made the movie, are hapy with the returns so far and, in fact, seem to see it as predicted and part of the plan.

Speaking to Variety, the chief of domestic distribution for Amazon MGM, Kevin Wilson, spoke optimistically about the movie’s opening and how it opens many doors, moving ahead: “[Director] Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy—building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.”

Tidbit:

One of the biggest characters from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe lore not to be a part of the movie was Skeletor’s henchman, Merman, but if you were sharp-eyed during the movie’s first mid-credit scene, you may have spotted him in the background.

Now, a newly released behind-the-scenes image of Merman and another villain, Clawful, who also must be hiding in the background somewhere, has given us a clear look at the characters.

It’s worth noting that the outfits are a big more basic-looking as they were used as background characters and, should we see them in future sequels, I’d fully expect them to look better… but there’s no mistaking who they are from the image:

Masters of the Universe is a delight and, as someone who was playing with He-Man, Skeletor and Castle Greyskull on my living room floor back in 1983, I can tell you the movie is a total delight, from the designs, the sets, the cast, the score by Daniel Pemberton and Queen’s Brian May, everything is perfect and done with so much love, and seeing more of this world would be high on my list of want to see sequels and TV shows.

And with the merchandise selling very well everywhere and the 4k release preorders already selling out, it looks like the big screen really was just the start of this journey and, thanks to the streaming possibilities, the ticket sales are the cinemas aren’t the be-all and end-all of this version of Master of the Universe.

Don’t forget that the movie has three mid-credit scenes, with two of them clearly setting up another movie or two, so even early on, Amazon/MGM had big plans for the franchise… I, for one, and I know there are a lot of us out there, really hope we return to Eternia very, very soon.

So, a Masters of the Universe sequel could still happen… thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
