You may all recall some time ago Joss Whedon – remember him before he fell from grace? – was attached to direct a Batgirl movie and then Justice League happened and the DCEU hit the rocks for a time and he was fired (here), well now it seems a new Batgirl movie is coming.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the directors of Bad Boys For Life, have signed on to make the live-action movie with Birds of Prey and Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson writing.
The movie will feature Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, who steps into the shadow of Batman to become one of Gotham’s main crimefighters.
But don’t be lining up to buy your cinema tickets yet because, like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, this will be set for HBO Max rather than the big screen.
Cruella producer Kristin Burr will be delivering the movie: “With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham.
“Christina’s script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy, which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”
This is a very interesting development, especially since we’ve been hearing that HBO Max wants Ben Affleck’s Batman/Bruce Wayne to return… could we see him cameo here as a re-introduction for HBO Max viewers? And, if so, will we also see JK Simmons back as Commissioner Gordon? After all, we can’t have Batgirl without Jim Gordon and Batman… so, it seems to me that having this as a part, like Hodson’s Birds of Prey, of the DCEU is a no-brainer.
And, it also makes us wonder about the revelation recently that Batgirl was set to join Affleck’s Batman against Deathstroke in his movie (here) and yes, I still 100% support Last Man Standing’s Kaitlyn Dever for the role (here).
What say you all? Will we be returning to Zack Snyder’s Gotham for Batgirl? Let me hear your thoughts.
