Oh man, why can DC/Warners not work out what to do with Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke.
Seriously, he’s like the anti-Batman, a total bad-ass who kills for money and s as formidable as any fighter in the DC universe and he’s almost made it to the big screen several times and, when he appeared in the mid-credit scene in Joss Whedon’s Justice League – and is going to appear in Zack Snyder’s Justice League – we all thought it was only a matter of time; especially after that teaser Ben Affleck dropped while filming Batman V Superman.
After all, it was revealed in 2017 that The CW couldn’t use the character any more due to big screen plans (here) and we all know that The Raid’s Gareth Edwards was well into developing a gritty (low-budget) Deathstroke movie (here) and Affleck’s original Batman scrapped movie featured Deathstroke as the main villain and now it seems that we almost got him in the original Suicide Squad planned sequel before James Gunn took over too.
Speaking recently about Edwards’ planned movie, Manganiello had this to say recently: “When the dust settled [after Batman V Superman’s cool reception], it was not seen as a priority to make a $40 million movie about a villain origin story in which you show the backstory.”
Oh, in light of this, how Joker must have stung….
But there were other chances to see the star back in the (very cool) orange and black armour: “There were four or five different versions of Suicide Squad 2 that I was put on hold for, for dates, waiting for one actor to free up and we were going to go,” said Manganiello.
“Then they re-did the end credits sequence to tease a Justice League 2 Injustice League for the bad guys that didn’t happen, clearly.”
On top of this, in a new interview, Manganiello reveals that in Ben Affleck’s Batman movie, in which Deathstroke was the main villain, we were set to see Batgirl appear and help Batman defeat him:

Good lord! I can promise you Deathstroke, if done right, is a character cinema-going audiences would adore and yet, they just can’t get him on screen!
Look, I’m annoyed about this all to be honest, but at least we’ll see him appear in Zack Snyder’s Justice League which is (squee!) less than a week away now.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League, dropping March 18 on HBO Max.
